TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS IN FINLAND

TUITION FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

PLAN YOUR STUDENT FINANCING CAREFULLY

One important aspect of study or research in Finland is considering how to finance your studies. As an international student you are usually required to independently cover your everyday living expences like food, accommodation, travel, insurance, etc. Non-EU students also usually need to pay tuition fees in English-taught Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes.

HOW MUCH MONEY WILL YOU NEED?

For your everyday living expenses, we recommend that you reserve at least 700-900 euros per month - see section Cost of living.
If you are a non-EU/EEA student applying for English-taught Bachelor's or Master's programmes, you are also likely to be subject to tuition fees. Note that the universities also have non-EU scholarship options available for these fee-charging degree courses. Read more in the section Non-EU tuition fees and scholarships.

WORKING DURING STUDIES

Part-time work is allowed for students of all nationalities, but part-time work may not be easy to find especially if you do not know Finnish or Swedish. That's why you should not base your financial plans solely on the option of finding part-time employment. Also keep in mind that earnings from possible part-time work may not in themselves be sufficient to cover all your living expenses.
Please refer to the section Working during studies for some information and advice.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S LEVEL

Generally speaking, there are few if any scholarships available for Bachelor's or Master's studies in Finland - especially if you are not subject to tuition fees (EU/EEA citizens). However, scholarships for non-EU/EEA students admitted to fee-charging Bachelor's or Master's are offered by the universities/UAS's.
In the Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes scholarships are available, too.
You might wish to check if you would be eligible to apply for some study abroad scholarships in your home country, and from international organisations and foundations. For information on these, please turn to the educational advisers and authorities in your home country. Additionally, if full degree studies are not an option for you, you could check if there are some student exchange options that you could apply for. See the section on Exchange programmes for more info.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL (PHD) LEVEL

National scholarship schemes (CIMO scholarships) exist for students planning to come to Finland for Doctoral level studies. Please refer to the left-hand margin menu for information on these and other scholarship options.
For Doctoral admissions advice, see section Doctoral admissions.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POST-DOCTORAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH

In the section Other sources of funding you can find general research funding links, for example the Academy of Finland website. Also your hosting Finnish university can inform you of the possible post-doc funding organisations and foundations in Finland.

Higher Education system in Hungary

Study in Hungary - ELTEThe Hungarian  higher education is split to a system of colleges and universities, where colleges are directly affiliated with a university and operate as college faculties of the university. Universities generally award both college and university level courses. In the old system, college level training lasts three to four years, where as a university degree takes at least four years to complete and at most 5 years with the exception of the six year long medical program. Further, university studies were split in three stages roughly corresponding to the bachelor, master and PhD courses but with longer study periods.
Starting in 2005 and 2006, Hungarian institutions of higher education have started the transformation toward the regulations of the Bologna system. In the new system, both colleges and universities may launch bachelor, master and PhD programs provided that the necessary requirements are fulfilled. This also means that all awarded degrees are equivalent and transferable throughout the EU and many other countries.
As in other countries, some qualifications will not be available at bachelor level, but instead start with the award of a master degree. Examples of such qualifications are: medical studies, veterinary science, pharmaceutical studies and architecture to name a few.

The Hungarian Academic Year
The Hungarian academic year runs with teaching from September to June with long holidays in July and August.

Degree Structure in Hungary
Degrees in Hungarian higher education reformed to conform to the international standard of the Bologna process. This means that apart from certain vocational degrees awarded by non-university and college institutions, degrees awarded will conform to the standard of bachelor, master and PhD degrees. This means that not only will degrees be more widely comparable on the international market, but it will also be more widely possible to pursue a master degree in a different field than your bachelor for example.
In certain more vocationally directed courses such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine to name a few, the first degree awarded is a master degree after five to six years of study depending on the field.
Hungary’s EU membership also means that its degrees awarded in medicine, veterinary studies and architecture are directly tranferrable and accepted for professional purposes to other EU countries.
